A Moscow communique states that street fighting’ continued today in Melitopol, the last German centre in the defence line guarding the Crimea. Red Army troops stormed several more blocks of houses in the town. According to one report the Russians are fighting south-west of Melitopol. Soviet forces have advanced from three to six miles southeast of Kremenchug and captured several places, including three railway stations. South of Kiev, the Russians have enlarged their bridgehead on the west bank of the Dnieper. Further up the front, they have also extended a bridgehead and south of Gomel have improved their positions. Crisis point is near along the entire Dnieper front, says Reuter’s Moscow correspondent. Shaken German units are rolling back to the south-west from the vital Kremenchug sector, and the Russian break-through has swiftly extended to the railways.
