RAILWAY CROSSING

ROAD ALARMS NOT CONSIDERED NECESSARY. BOROUGH COUNCIL’S DECISION. The Works Committee of the Masterton Borough Council recommended to a meeting of the Council last night that it did not regard as necessary a request from the Wairarapa Automobile Association that the Council support its represenation to the General Manager of Railways that alarm signals should be installed at the Renall Street railway crossing. “I am sorry to see the committee’s decision,” observed Councillor R. Russell. “I think the time is not far distant when we will have to have these alarms. I am not going to move a motion on the subject, but I want the council to know my opinion.” The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said the Council was advised by its traffic inspectors, and accepted their guidance. Councillor A. T. Jackson said the Renall Street crosing was obscured on one side. Councillor Russell pointed out that a nasty accident had taken place at the Cornwall Street crossing. The committee’s recommendation was adopted.
