At the Pahiatua hospital yesterday the death occurred of Mrs Emma Hanson, wife of Mr Henry Hanson, of Nireaha, at the age of 64 years. The Very Rev. Dr. J. A. Kennedy has been appointed the Vicar-Capitular to administer the diocese of Christchurch, pending the appointment by the Holy See of a successor to the late Bishop Brodie. Dr. Kennedy for some years has been parish priest at Beckenham. The engagement is announced of Olwyn Maude Richards, Mastertoil, only daughter of Mr and the late Mrs B. N. Richards. Palmerston North, and Edward Arthur (R.N.Z.A.F.), third son of Mrs L. Sanko, Stratford, and the late Mr P. Sanko, Sault Ste Marie, Canada. The death occurred in Wellington on Sunday of Mrs Edith Martin Ingles, widow of the late Mr William St Clair Ingles, of Dixon Street, Masterton. The late Mrs Ingles was 69 years of age. The funeral took place in Featherston this afternoon.
The Hon. J. G. Barclay, who lost his seat. Marsden, at the general election, tendered his resignation as a member of the Executive Council to the Gover-nor-General. Sir Cyril Newall. yesterday. He also resigned his portfolios as Minister of Agriculture, Marketing. Lands, and Commissioner of State Forests. Mr Barclay left Wellington last night for a holiday in the South Island.
The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday, after a long illness, of Mr William Saunderson Cooper, at the age of 61. Mr Cooper was born in Ilkeston. Derbyshire, and was educated at Dulwich College, London. Secretary of 1913, Mr Cooper was appointed to the the Petone Fire Board from 1912 to Cook Islands Administration in the latter year, and was resident agent at Mauke till 1918, when he went to a similar position at Aotutaki. He was assistant secretary of Native Affairs, Samoa, from 1911 to 1922, and Resident Commissioner at Savaii in 1922-1923. The death occurred on Sunday in Christchurch, after a long illness, of Mr W. P, Rollings, one of the most outstanding of the younger members of the legal profession in Wellington. He was 38 years of age. Mr Rollings was born in Adelaide, South Australia. He married Miss Vivienne Tait, of Wellington, who, with two young children, survives him. After attending State schools, Mr Rollings went to Wellington College and from there to Victoria College. While he was attending Victoria College in 1925 he won the Union Prize, and in 1927 won the Plunket Medal oratory contest. The following year he won the Joynt Scroll with Mr J. F. Platts-Mills. Mr Rollings graduated M.A. and LL.B, from Victoria College. In 1939 he was appointed to the Victoria College Council, the governing body of the institution.
