WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MONTHLY MEETINGS GATHERING AT GLADSTONE (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Gladstone Women’s Institute was held recently when Mrs Cooper presided over a good attendance of members. A letter was received from a soldier in the Middle East acknowledging a parcel. Mesdames Smith and McKay were appointed delegates to attend the council meeting in Carterton next month. The roll-call, “Christmas Gifts I Like,” was well responded to. A very interesting demonstration on sewing boxes, patch work aprons and slippers was given by Mrs Munn, who was accorded a vote of thanks and presented with a posy. The monthly competitions resulted as follows: —Best bloom, Mrs Palmer 1, Mrs Crewe 2, Mrs Cooper and Mrs McKay, equal 3. Xmas novelty, Mrs Cooper 1, Mrs Dudson 2, Mrs Bradley 3. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs McKay and her helpers. Next month the competitions will be: One rose, three roses or six roses, and a decorated bowl. The roll call will be “More flower garden hints.” OPAKI COMPETITION WINNERS (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute was held at “Oaklea,” Mrs Beetham presiding. The competitions will be: A Christmas novelty, pikelets, gramophone record, flower, dish with flowers. The “roll call” will be “colour preferences.”
