The Air Ministry news service says Whirlwind bombers of the Fighter Command made a damaging sortie against, railways in and around the Cherbourg Peninsula in moonlight early this morning. They hit five locomotives and railway bridges and damaged railway tracks in various areas. A motor launch disappeared after a cannon attack and is believed to have been sunk. One of five locomotives attacked is thought to have been drawing an ammunition train, for there were violent explosions. South coast observers say the daylight air offensive over the Continent was continued in sunny weather today. Waves of Allied planes crossed the Channel in both directions during intense air activity early this afternoon. After formations of aircraft had been observed going out over the southeast coast at a number of points between Dungeness and Dover, a groat fleet of bombers was sighted at Folkestone, returning from the other side of the Channel. Squadrons of fighters which had gone out a little before were over Northern France. Activity continued for some time and an hour after/wards more planes were returning from Northern France.
