GREAT EXPANSION
OF AIR ATTACKS BY DAY ON GERMANY ON SCALE NEVER BEFORE SEEN PLANNED BY AMERICANS. IMPORTANT REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVING. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, October 18. The American Air Force is planning a daylight offensive against Germany on a scale never before seen in aerial warfare, says the “Daily Express” aviation writer. Important reinforcements of war planes and crews will soon join the United States Eighth Air Force in Britain. Already an additional 600 trained flying crews have arrived at air stations in Britain from America. Bomber reinforcements expected soon will include forces of Americas powerful new aircraft. The Allied air chiefs are obviously making a big effort to cause maximum destruction before Germany’s new defensive weapons can be produced on a full scale. The writer adds that America’s military and air experts have laid their plans after studying the brilliant successes of recent Flying Fortress raids on Germany. Since the Allied landing in North Africa last November, the enemy has lost more than,6,500 planes, says Renter's Algiers correspondent. These include 1,245 found abandoned on captured airfields in Italy. Many of the captured planes had been smashed or damaged by our air attacks. BASES IN ITALY FOR ATTACK ON GERMANY EARLY USE BY ALLIED BOMBERS LONDON, October 18. It was officially stated today at Allied Headquarters in North Africa that the North African Air Force will shortly be in a position to make large scale attacks on targets in Germany. When that was possible, it was added, Allied planes could take advantage of the most favourable weather conditions in either Britain or Italy to reach their objectives.
