ADVANCE BEYOND ZAPOROZHE Main Defences at Kiev Being Attacked BY SOVIET FORCES FROM REAR DNIEPER BRIDGEHEADS CONSIDERABLY WIDENED LONDON, October 15. A Moscow communique reports that the Russians have advanced five to seven miles from Zaporozhe. Street fighting’ continues in Melitopol. All German counter-attacks have been repulsed. The Russians have also improved their positions north and south of Kiev. Despatches from Moscow state that Russian forces have reached the main defences of Kiev in the rear of the city. The Russian bridgeheads over the Dnieper are now so wide that the Red Army Headquarters has been established on the west bank of the river. Russian soldiers from Stalingrad took part in the capture of the Dnieper Bend city of Zaporozhe. There was panic among the remaining German soldiers in the city and hundreds were caught in the water by machine-gun bullets.
