SERIOUS CHARGES

AGAINST AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN DEVON AFFRAY IN TOWN SQUARE (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, October 15. Fourteen American soldiers were charged with mutiny at an American court-martial at Paignton, in Devon, today. They were also charged with shooting with intent to murder two American police sergeants and others in the square of the town, with rioting and unlawfully taking firearms and with making inflammatory statements. The prosecution said that on September 26 a group of soldiers, including the accused, armed themselves, obtained ammunition and marched to the market square within a few yards of some military police. Firing started and two police were wounded. There was a crowd in the square, which immediately dispersed. A witness said there were no British soldiers in the group.
