FOREST FIRES

SABOTAGE IN FRANCE Forest fires have always been common in the south of France in peace time. But in war time they have been out of all proportion to the usual cases of accident and spontaneous combustion that have so often sent a sheet of flame through a pine wood on the slope of a hill slanting down to the Mediterranean. Arson is charged against “woodmen trying to increase the value of wood, shepherds waiting to obtain cheap pasture, jealous neighbours.” Such are the reasons advanced by “L’Alerte.” The truth is that desperate men in France are firing forests as still another means of creating confusion and difficulty for the invader and his Vichy henchmen.
