GAINED BY ALLIED FORCES CLIMATIC CONDITIONS GOOD. MOVEMENTS OFF THE ROADS POSSIBLE. (Special Australian Correspondent.) (Received This Day, 9.32 a.m.) RUGBY, October 14. The battle of Volturno has begun. The river has been crossed and the advance continues on the rest of the front. Allied Headqquarters, North Africa, announce: “On the night of October 12 the Fifth Army launched strong attacks on the Volturno River positions held by the enemy. Several bridgeheads have been gained. The climatic conditions for the attack were favourable and the ground was dry enough to permit movements off the roads. The enemy is fighting fiercely to retain his hold on his positions covering the river. Short advances by troops of the Eighth Army have been made in the northern and central sectors.”
