THREAT TO GERMANS

BY ADVANCE ON RIGHT FLANK BITTER FIGHTING CONTINUES. EFFECTIVE AIR SUPPORT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) RUGBY, October 14. In Italy, on the right flank, the Fifth Army has advanced north of the Calore River to Guardia, 8 miles northeast of the confluence of the Volturno and Calore Rivers. This is an urgent threat for Germans in the western sector. Fighting is still as bitter as at any time during the whole campaign. Although some Germans are very tired, they evidently are attempting to hold us in the south as long as possible. In the Eighth Army district rearguard actions were fought, and these led to severe fighting. Our patrols are very active. One occupied a position five miles south-east of the important town of Campobasso. Our adance was from four to five miles. The Allied air offensive in the battle area yesterday was again most efficacious. Concentrations of German armour and troops north of the Volturno River, evidently preparing to attack the Allied positions, were spotted by Mustang reconnaissance planes, and

bombers were directed to the target, and so effectively did they dive-bomb the enemy forces that the Fifth Army reported that the counter-attack was beaten off before it started.
