ANOTHER VICTORY
RUSSIANS CAPTURE ZAPOROZHE Important Centre Near Dnieper Bend CRIMEA ROUTE THREATENED FALL OF GOMEL BELIEVED IMMINENT The Russians have won another important victory in the great Dnieper Bend, where they have captured Zaporozhe. Announcing this in an order of the day, Marshal Stalin says fierce enemy resistance was encountered. Zaporozhe is one of the most heavily defended places on the south bank of the Dnieper. Further south the Germans face another critical situation. Unofficial news from Moscow states that a battle is going on inside the strongpoint of Melitopol, on the route to the Crimea. The Russians have fought their way through a strong German defence belt and the Germans have been forced back on a wide front. In White Russia, Soviet forces are assaulting Gomel, the enemy’s southern bastion on this stretch of the line. Fighting is reported to be going on among the blazing streets. There is no news of the fighting from Moscow, but the fall of Gomel is believed to be imminent.
