OBITUARY
MR E. H. SPACKMAN. The death occurred this morning of Mr Ernest Henry Spackman, of 20 Totara Street, Masterton. The late Mr Spackman, who was in his 71st year, had been in ill-health for some time. He was born at Greytown and had resided in the Wairarapa all his life. In his earlier days he was a carrier by occupation, and in 1911 he purchased the Masterton-Te WharauLands End mail service, and for almost 30 years he conducted that service on three days a week. For the first 41 years he used a coach, and after that motor vehicles. He could recall many experiences associated with this service, especially when, before the streams were bridged, he had to ford the creeks, which at most times were dangerous crossings. Mr Spackman started the service with a three-horse coach, and later used a five-horse team. In 1913 he carried the first mails through Westmere. For a period of three years during the last war he sold his contract and engaged in hauling timber on the same road with a six-horse waggon team. He then successfully tendered for the service again. Mr Spackman retired about two years ago. A widow, one son and five daughters, besids four brothers and two sisters, are left to mourn their loss. The son, Mr H. E. Spackman, is serving with the army, and the daughters are Mesdames W. Garner (Wellington), T. Nelson (Wellington), S. Flaws (Lower Hutt), T. Daly (Masterton), and Miss N. Spackman (Masterton). The funeral will take place on Thursday, leaving the late residence, following a service at 3 p.m.. for the Masterton Cemetery. MRS F. J. CAREY. The death occurred at her residence, Titoki Street, Lansdowne, today of Mrs Elizabeth Carey, at the age of 96 years. The late Mrs Carey, who was the widow of the late Mr Francis John Carey, was born at Nelson, and came to the Wairarapa over 40 years ago. Her father, Mr William Budge, who was a surveyor and civil engineer, came to New Zealand in 1841, and with three others surveyed the district around Blenheim. Mrs Carey was a great worker for patriotic efforts, and knitted comforts for soldiers until a few days ago. Her husband and two sons predeceased her and she is survived by two daughters, Mrs J. Buchanan (Upper Plain) and Miss Carey (Masterton), to whom will be extended the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral will be a private one.
