VISIT TO NAPLES
MADE BY GENERAL ALEXANDER i.,INTEREST IN PORT REPAIRS. TO ATTACK VOLTURNO LINE. (British Official Wireless.) - ■ (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) RUGBY, October 11. General Alexander arrived in 'Naples today, says a war correspondent, and personally complimented General Clark on the magnificent achievements of the Fifth Army in capturing Naples against such formidable German opposition. General Clark showed General Alexander round Naples. General Alexander showed particular interest in the port, where Allied engineers and repair units were at work clearing the area of mines and debris. The port of Naples will be under the Royal Navy, while the Fifth Army will control the city. General Alexander had a long discussion with Marshal Badoglio’s representative, Signor Piceardi, concerning governmental reconstruction in Naples, which is at present controlled by Amgot. % Bad weather has slowed operations along the Volturno front, but the lull is not expected to last long, states a correspondent at Naples. General Clark’s preparations for a big assault are proceeding unhindered, and when the attack comes it will carry a hard punch. It is beyond doubt that the Germans count the Volturno as an important defence line and a successful crossing will definitely put the Fifth Army on the road to Rome, hard though that road may be. A Reuter corresoondent quotes a military spokesman as saying: “The German resistance in Italy is strengthening along the whole line, and there will be hard slogging ahead, especially along the Volturno River.” “COMMUNIST” LOOTING REPORTED BY ROME RADIO DEATH & OTHER SENTENCES (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 11. The Rome radio reports that “Communists,” armed with rifles and hand grenades, last night attempted to loot a food depot and clothing store in Rome. When challenged, the Communists opened fire and threw grenades. Nineteen were arrested and appeared before a military tribunal, when six were sentenced to death, one to life imprisonment, six to imprisonment for 30 years, one for 24 years and two for six years.
