GREAT ANXIETY
SHOWN BY THE JAPANESE IN BURMA INCREASED PATROL ACTIVITY ON BOTH SIDES. ENEMY DETACHMENT AMBUSHED LONDON, October 11. Now that the monsoon season in Burma is passing, there is increased land activity by both sides. Both the British and Japanese are using big land patrols. The enemy is showing great anxiety and is sending out patrols of unusual strength. One Japanese patrol was ambushed and heavy casualties were inflicted on it. Two Japanese attacks were repelled.
American bombers struck at tin mines in south-west Burma. In these and other air operations not a single Allied plane was lost.
FULL BLACK-OUT FIRST TEST IN PORTUGAL. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) ' LISBON, October 10. Portugal had its first full-scale blackout during the weekend. Portuguese legions of the naval brigade were ordered to report to barracks with full equipment. The War Ministry has requisitioned all private cars for manoeuvres which will be held this month, and has' ordered all Lisbon garages to be prepared to accommodate armoured vehicles. Many families have already evacuated Lisbon.
