MAN TO BE TRIED

ON CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER. LOWER COURT HEARING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. Charged with attempting to murder his wife, Kathleen Ann Ryan, on Ocober 2, Arthur William Ryan, fnachinist, 37, appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court this morning, Ryan was also charged with carrying a firearm without lawful purpose. Mrs. Ryan, in evidence, said that she had not been living with her husband since November last. On .the night of October 2, Ryan came to the house where she was living with her mother. She heard a noise outside, and, taking a poker, went out. She saw her husband fumbling at the gate, and grabbed hold of him while he was trying to get on his bicycle. “I hit him on the back of the head with the poker,” witness said. It was later found that a pane of glass in the scullery window had been broken, and on the following day she was present when a bullet was recovered from a weatherboard. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Heron gave evidence about the arrest of Ryan. A firearm had been found in Ryan’s overcoat pocket, the detective said. He told Ryan his wife had made certain allegations to the effect that he had fired a shot, at her and attempted to murder her. Ryan said, “I went there with that intention. I am sorry I did not do it. She had driven me mad.” Ryan pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
