Brigade Major M. Fairbrother, of Masterton, who is serving with the Second N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East, has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and is in charge of a battalion.
The death yesterday of Lady Elinor Angela Ward, widow of Sir Cyril Ward and daughter-in-law of a former Prime Minister, the late Sir Joseph Ward, is reported in a Press Association telegram from Christchurch. Born on Westbrook Station, Toowoomba, Queensland, in 1886, Lady Ward married Sir Cyril Ward in December, 1908. After their marriage they lived in Invercargill, going to Christchurch in 1913. After over 44 years in the Public Service, the Valuer-General, Mr 'W. Stewart, has retired on superannuation. He began his service as a clerical cadet in the Lands and Survey district office, Wellington, in March, 1899. and during his cadetship served also as a draughting and as a field cadet. He passed the examination for surveyor in 1906. In 1923 he was transferred to Christchurch as chief draughtsman. Later he became Commissioner of Crown Lands for Canterbury and in 1934 he was transferred back to Wellington on promotion to the office of Valuer-General.
