TWO MAORIS FINED
OFFENCE IN MASTERTON. In the Masterton Magistrate's Court this morning. Edward Lawton, aged 19 with the theft of a military greatcoat, a Maori of Feilding was charged and Kenneth Merritt, aged 18 years, also a Maori, of Feilding, was charged • ; with receiving the coat. Each accused was fined £2. Messrs. L. J. Taylor and A D. Low, J.’sP., were on the Bench.
Scnior-Sergfant C. Murphy said that a Maori soldier had his coat stolen from a cloak room while attending a dance in Masterton. Last night Constable McCallum located the accused and they admitted the offences with which they were charged. The SeniorSergeant said the accused had no right to be still wearing their uniforms. Lawton told the Court that someone had stolen his overcoat so he had taken 'one from the cloak room.
