GUN DOG TRIALS
FIELD AND WATER EVENTS MASTERTON COMPETITOR WINS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP LARGE ENTRIES & KEEN COMPETITION The Wairarapa Gun Dog Club’s 1943 championships were held yesterday at the Lake Domain, Featherston. A large crowd of spectators witnessed the events, especially in the afternoon. The entries were the best for some years. In the Open Championship of the Wairarapa there was a field of 19, 11 from the Wairarapa Club, three from Christchurch, two from Levin, and one each from Huntly, Wanganui and Lower Hutt. The winner, Mr M. A. Rawlins’s Field Trial Champion Labrador, Cleopatra May, was in fine form. She came first in the land section and first-equal in the water section, giving her a very high score and a clear-cut win in the aggregate. The runner-up was Mr H. Cox’s (Christchurch) Labrador, Bruce Junior, 187 points, closely followed by Mr Trevor Beetham’s (Masterton) Labrador, Cleopatra 11, with 184. The Retriever championship was won by Mr Fred Brough, Tauherenikau, with his Labrador Zulu, from a field of 12. It was a well-deserved win. In the Pointer and Setter championship Mr R. W. Plunkett (Lower Hutt) was successful, while in the Spaniel championship the winner turned out to be Mr J. Ruscoe (Wanganui). A special word of praise is due to the manner in which the Lower Valley sportsmen, Messrs Prussing (Martinborough), Brough and Nix (Tauherenikau) and Mclvor, McGill, Salisbury, Stan Hall and Walker (Featherston), put through their part of the day’s work. The shooting in particular was outstanding in the morning, when d strong gale made no difference to their fine marksmanship. To Mesdames A. Mclvor and Smith, both of Featherston, the club owes much for their valued services in the afternoon tea booth, and their efforts were greatly appreciated by club members, visiting competitors and the public in general. The judges, Messrs R. V. Mason (championships), C. E. Grey and W. Harding (othei’ events) ably got over the difficulties caused by the wind, and their decisions were well received. The trophy list was announced by the president of the Wairarapa Club, Mr J: Bouzaid, and Mr C. E. Grey (patron) made reference, at his presentation of the various prizes, to all who had assisted to make the outing such a success. The following are the detailed results: — OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP Mr M.
