CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs. Hughes presided over the monthly meeting of the Matarawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute. An interesting array of felt work was shown by Mrs. Mannell and Mrs. Johnson, of Masterton, for which they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions for the month resulted as follows: Seniors: Best handkerchief from salt bag: Mrs. Ross Gallon 1, Mrs. L. Rogers 2 Mrs. R. Gallon 3. Flowers: Best three polyanthus: Mrs. L. Rogers 1, Mrs. C. Wilson 2, Mrs. W. Ticehurst 3. Juniors: Best handkerchief from salt bag: Miss J. Conwell 1, Miss B. Sadler 2, Miss J. Goodin 3. Flowers: Best three polyanthus: Miss J. Conwell 1, Miss B. Sadler 2, Miss P, Knowles 3. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Rogers, Knutson, Ticehurst, and Wilson. PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE DANCE AT BELVEDERE. There was a good attendance at the Belvedere schoolroom last night when the district patriotic committee held a dance for the purpose of raising funds to provide parcels for soldiers overseas. An enjoyable time was spent by the dancers to music supplied by Mrs. Rogers. Miss I. Thomas played a much appreciated extra. The duties of M. were capably carried out by Mr. A. E. Reid. Personal Items. Mrs. L. Goodin, who had spent an extended holiday with her son at Te Kauwhata has returned to Carterton. Rex Hercock, recently junior on the staff of Aplin’s Pharmacy, Carterton, has been accepted as a cadet by the N. Railways, and is commencing duties at Wellington in the Loco. Dept. Sharp Earthquake. A sharp earthquake was felt in Carterton at 1.40 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
