JAPANESE OFFENSIVE IN CHINA. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) y CHUNGKING, October 8. The Japanese offensive has apparently collapsed. A Japanesf? column has retired in the Langchi area, west of Lake lai. Chinese guerillas are increasingly active behind the Japanese lines. American aircraft in co-operation with ground forces on China's eastern front have been defending bases against Japanese attacks from the air. Mitchell bombers attacked shipping on the Yangtse River.
