NAVAL ACTION
FOUGHT IN SOLOMONS THREE JAPANESE SHIPS SUNK INCLUDING LIGHT CRUISER ALLIED LOSSES MODERATE (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, October 8. In a night engagement with Japanese forces endeavouring to assist in the evacuation of remnants of Japanese troops from Kolombangara, Allied warships attacked one Japanese light cruiser and four destroyers. The light cruiser and one destroyer were hit and sunk by gunfire. A second destroyer was sunk by torpedoes and both the other destroyers were damaged. Allied losses are officially described as moderate.
