Messrs A. Marker and J. Cox, Christchurch, arc visiting the Wairarapa and will compete with their retrievers in the Wairarapa gun dog championships at the Lake Domain, Featherston, tomorrow.

Mr. S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington last night for Christchurch. He will return to Wellington on October 19 for the first caucus of the Opposition, which will be followed by a meeting of the National Party’s Dominion executive.

The death occurred in Masterton on Thursday of Mr Harry Smith, of 73 Church Street, Masterton. The late Mr Smith, who was 69 years of age, was a gardener by occupation. He had resided in Masterton for the past three years and formerly lived at Petone. The funeral took place in Wellington today. The appointment of Mr. G. P. Finlay, Auckland barrister and solicitor, to the Supreme Court Bench, has been announced by the Attorney-General, Mr. Mason. Mr. Finlay will be seconded to the presidency of the Land Sales Court under the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act. The announcement was made following approval by Cabinet,

The death is reported from Christchurch of Mr. W. L. Henry, one of the members of the First N.Z.E.F. Rugby football team which won the King’s Cup in competition against other service teams at the end of the last war. Mr. Henry played as five-eighth. He was a member of the N.Z.E.F. team which later toured South Africa. On his return to New Zealand he represented Canterbury six times in 1921 as full-back. He was 49 years of age at his death.

The appointment of Lieutenant-Col-onel F. Baker, D. 5.0., as Director of Rehabilitation was announced yesterday by the Minister of Rehabilitation, Major Skinner. Lieutenant-Colonel Baker is at present undergoing further treatment in Christchurch for a wound he received on active service. In 1942 he was appointed officer commanding the Maori Battalion, succeeding the late Lieutenant-Colonel E. T. W. Love, who was killed in action, and was later invalided back to New Zealand. He went overseas with the second echelon. In civil life he was on the staff of the State Advances Corporation.
