INCLUDING VITAL RAILWAY TOWN OF NEVEL On Line Linking Enemy North and Centre GERMAN KUBAN BRIDGEHEAD LIQUIDATED SOVIET TROOPS ESTABLISH BRIDGEHEADS BEYOND DNIEPER LONDON, October 7. THE RED ARMY HAS LAUNCHED A NEW OFFENSIVE ALONG THE WHOLE FRONT FROM WHITE RUSSIA TO THE BLACK SEA. THIS GREAT NEWS IS GIVEN IN TONIGHT'S SOVIET COMMUNIQUE. It follows swiftly on an order of the day from Marshal Stalin announcing the capture of the town of Nevel, 60 miles north of Vitebsk. It is a vital centre on the railway running south from Leningrad to White Russia. Marshal Stalin emphasised the great importance of this victory. The communique states that after a lull which was necessary in order to bring up fresh troops from the rear, Soviet forces had again launched an offensive against the enemy along the whole front from Vitebsk to the Kuban Peninsula in the extreme south. In northern Caucasia the Soviet forces have successfully liquidated the enemy bridgehead in the Kuban Peninsula. A large number of places have been captured and enemy troops who did! not have time to evacuate are being annihilated. Soviet troops have successfully crossed the Dnieper and established bridgeheads at three places in the Kiev area. The Germans have launched strong counter-attacks against the Russian forces which crossed the river, but all attacks are being repelled with heavy losses to the enemy. The Red Army is enlarging its bridgeheads. The communique gives further details of the capture of Nevel. Soviet troops broke through a strongly defended German line and advanced on a 15-mile front to a depth of 15 miles. In two days ’ heavy fighting they captured the town and railway station of Nevel and also 100 other places in this area. Further north the Russians have also advanced nine miles and captured a number of places.
