CARTERTON
MAGISTRATE’S COURT MONTHLY SITTING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the S.M. Court at Carterton yesterday. W. H. Steel, licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel, was charged that at Carterton he sold liquor after hours. A plea of guilty was entered and a fine of £lO with costs 10s, was imposed. A further charge on the same date was withdrawn. A. E. Ansell (Transport Department) charged A. W. Herring that on August 14, 1943, he affixed a registered number plate to an unlicensed vehicle. Accused was fined £2, with costs 10s L. C. Rossiter, who aided and assisted A. W. Herring in committing the offence, was fined £2 and costs 10s. Lyall Reginald Thornton was charged with having been, on October 1, 1943, at Clareville, in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor cai on the Main Highway. Defendant collided with a car driven by Mr. Alex Keith, of Masterton, who was taking fcui’ passengers to a dance recital at Carterton. The car driven by Thornton was overturned and damaged. After having heard the evidence the Magistrate reserved his decision. Property Sales. During the past month three properties have changed hands at figures satisfactory to the vendors concerned. Personal Items. Mrs. F. Shutkowski, of §>outh Carterton, has sold her house to Mr. C. Zillwood, and will reside in Grey Street, Master ton. Bowling. Teams of Carterton bowlers will be present at the official openings of the Masterton and Park bowling greens on i Saturday next. Boy Scouts’ Card Tournament. At the card tournament held by the Scout Committee the prizes were won as follows:—Ladies: Mrs Mabey 1, Mesdames Hooper and Sowman, equal, 2. Men: Mr Mabey 1, Mr Wadsworth 2. Women’s Division Meeting. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Miss Arcus reported that she had paid £l7, the proceeds of a recent dance, in to the prisoner of war parcels fund. Competitions were won. as follow: — Flowers: Mrs Hicks 1 and 3, Mrs Couper 2. Shrubs: Mrs Standen 1, Mrs Couper 2 and 3. Cabbage: Mrs Hicks 1, Mrs Standen 2 and 3. Lettuce: Mrs Hicks. Ladies’ Hockey Club Dance. The Carterton Ladies’ Hockey Club held a dance in the State Theatre last night. The large number of people present spent an enjoyable time. The music was supplied by Mrs Ashton's orchestra. A lucky snot waltz was won by Miss C. O’Keefe and Mr Bankstead, and a Monte Carlo dance by Miss Mary and First Lieut. A. Lawrence. A muchappreciated extra was played by Miss Lola Hopkins. Mr V. J. Ashton was M.C. The supper arrangements were presided over by a committee of hockey girls.
