AIR ATTACKS
OVER AND BEYOND BATTLE AREA DAMAGING BLOWS STRUCK AT RAILWAY AN OTHER TARGETS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, October 6. A North African air communique says: “On Tuesday heavy bombers attacked the Bolzano marshalling yards, hitting railroad shops and. an oil depot, causing several explosions. Strong enemy opposition was encountered. Medium bombers made attacks on highways and bridges at Formia, Isernis and Mignano. Fighters and fighterbombers maintained patrols over the battle area, attacking motor concentrations and trains. During these and other operations 15 enemy aircraft were destroyed and six of ours are missing. Night bombers attacked Grosseto last night, causing several large fires and explosions.” The capture of Aversa, eight miles north of Naples and Maddaloni 14 miles north-east is announced by a correspondent, who adds: “In the central sector our troops are still going forward and at one point have crossed the Volturno River. On the Eighth Army front the Germans counter-attacked, with infantry and tanks, our positions west of Termoli, where a heavy exchange by artillery took place yesterday.”
MOPPING UP IN PROGRESS IN CORSICA., SOME HUNDREDS OF GERMANS CAPTURED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY, October 6. A French communique, broadcast by the Algiers radio, states: “After the liberation of Corsica French troops are carrying out mopping-up operations. The captured booty is being counted in spite of time-bombs and booby traps. Several hundred Germans have been captured.”
