SUGAR & CONSERVES
RATIONING IN CANADA
OTTAWA, September 9
The ration allowance in Canada for sweet-spreads which became effective on September 2 is on the basis of two coupons for each month. For each coupon the purchaser has the choice of (1). six fluid ounces of jam, jelly, malade, extracted honey, apple butter, maple butter, or honey butter, or (2) ten fluid ounces of molasses or maple syrup, or (3)) ten fluid ounces of canned fruit, or (4) twelve fluid ounces of corn syrup, cane syrup, or any blended table syrup, or (5) one half-pound of maple sugar or cane sugar in squares. As an alternative to any of these commodities the consumer may obtain one half-pound of sugar each fortnight. The half-pound of sugar each two weeks provided as alternative to sweetspreads is additional to the present half-pound of sugar a week provided under the regular sugar coupons. Effective on October 1. the sugar quotas of industrial users are increased from 70 per cent to 80 per cent of 1941 usage. The War Time Prices and Trade Board explains that more sugar is made available because of ?. substantial reduction in the commercial pack of jams, jellies and canned fruits occasioned by the short fruit cron and the consequent reduction in the sugar used.
