MANY AIR ATTACKS
MADE ON JAPANESE IN BURMA TRANSPORT & OTHER TARGETS. RIVER CRAFT DAMAGED ON IRRAWADDY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY, October 5. An India communique states: “Yesterday evening R.A.F. Wellingtons bombed Taungup, at the western end of the Taungup Pass road, which connects the Irrawaddy valley with the coast south of Akyab. All the bombs fell in the target . area, and several large fires were started. Beaufighters set fire to an army lorry and to several buildings at the eastern end of the Taungup Pass road, and further east inflicted damage on barracks and other enemy-occupied buildings at Pyinmana. A Japanese high-flying reconnaissance aircraft which crossed our lines in Eastern Bengal was intercepted by Hurricanes. It was last seen diving away eastward, emitting smoke from the starboard engine. Hurricanes on Sunday attacked and damaged river craft on the Irrawaddy, south of Magwe. None of our aircraft are missing.
