EFFECTIVE BOMBING

GERMAN TARGETS IN ITALY AND GREECE PLANES AND BUILDINGS WRECKED BRENNER PASS SUPPLY ROUTE BATTERED (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, October 5. Liberators of the North-West African Air Force flew a round trip of more than 1200 miles in their first attack on Germans in Greece. Twelve German planes on the ground were wrecked. Four large hangars were hit several times and administrative buildings were set on fire at Menidi, noi th of Athens. . . Mitchells, making their first trip into the Balkans from new bases on the Italian mainland, dropped several thousand fragmentation bombs on an airfield at Argos and started six fires, two of which were oil fires. One of the bridges put out of commission in the Bolzano attack was a steel railway bridge. Fortresses, making a third trip to Bolzano, 30 miles south of the Brenner Pass, launched a most destructive attack on bridges over the Isarco River, putting them out of commission for some time and blocking supplies from Germnay to Italy over this direct route. Over Bolzano four enemy aircraft were destroyed. Wellingtons once more raided the coastal town of Formia, north-west of Naples. A huge explosion, caused by a 40001 b. bomb, was observed. Except in the Bolzano raid, our aircraft had no enemy air opposition to meet. A force of enemy aircraft was intercepted over the Adriatic coastal city of Termoli and one was destroyed, making a total' of five enemy planes shot down during the 24 hours.
