NEW AMBASSADOR REACHES WASHINGTON. HOPES OF CLOSE AND LASTING COLLABORATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 4. The Russian Ambassador, M. Andrei Gromyko, presenting his credentials to President Roosevelt, said that the Russian Government unswervingly desires to maintain and develop friendly relations and the closest collaboration with the United States. M. Gromyko expressed the opinion that the Allied campaigns in North Africa and Italy had created a favourable military and political situation for decisive blows against the enemy. President Roosevelt, in reply, praised the courage and self-sacrifice of the Russian people and said he fully shared the confidence that the present unity of purpose in the war will be translated into close and lasting collaboration, together with other like-minded countries, in establishing a just and enduring peace.
