FIERCE FIGHTING

REPORTED IN WHITE RUSSIA SOVIET TROOPS PRESSING FORWARD. AGAINST STRONG ENEMY RESISTANCE. LONDON, October 4. The Soviet offensive is at present confined to the southern half of White Russia, lhe Germans, who are putting' up a tough resistance round Gomel and further north, report heavy fighting.

Russian troops are reported to be within 12 miles of Gomel, and big battles are taking place on the approaches to the city. Enemy traffic jams have provided good targets for Soviet bombers.
