BY GERMAN FORCES IN ITALY

In Attempt to Delay Allied Advance FURTHER PROGRESS BY FIFTH AND EIGHTH ARMIES HILLS DOMINATING VOLTURNO RIVER OCCUPIED LONDON, October 4. In Italy, the Fifth Army is pushing on towards the Volturno ' River, north of Naples. Allied troops are meeting determined German resistance. The enemy gun positions are overrun when their ammunition is exhausted. The Germans know that these rearguards must either surrender or be killed. This indicates the importance the Germans attach to delaying the Allied advance. The United Nations radio at Algiers says the Allies, have occupied the hills dominating the Volturno River and a tributary. Allied troops are reported to have crossed a tributary and are threatening to outflank the Volturno line. The general layout of the country will probably enable the Germans, however, to hold the line for some time. Men from the Eighth Army landed 15 miles behind the enemy front at Termoli. They captured the town, took prisoners and repelled all German attempts to dislodge them. They were in control of the town when the Eighth Army reached it. Allied aircraft have been blasting roads and railway tracks north of'Naples and on the way to Rome. American medium bombers destroyed one of the main bridges across the Volturno River. Last night R.A.F. Wellingtons badly damaged marshalling yards on the coast north of Rome. FIGHTING ON ISLAND OF KOS Fighting continues on the Dodecanese island of Kos, where the Germans have secured several important points, following their landing yesterday. Allied aircraft attacked enemy shipping off Kos throughout yesterday. They scored many hits. Liberators and Halifaxes bombed airfields on Rhodes and Crete. All these operations <?ost six Aircraft.
