BOWLING CLUB PREPARATION OF GREENS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The green superintendents have been very busy during the past few days preparing the local bowling greens. Providing the weather conditions are favourable the greens should soon be ready for a final top dressing. The social committee is a live body ■and already has proved its worth. A successful snooker, tourney has just been concluded' and further tournaments are to be held. Arrangements have been made to hold card tournaments and a dance. Several new members have already been nominated. The ladies’ green which has had special treatment should be ready for play by the time the season is officially opened. The ladies’ club is increasing in popularity and several new players will be elected at the annual meeting on Saturday. WEDDING ROBERTS—DODDS • The marriage took place at St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Wellington, on Wednesday, of Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., and Mrs Isabella Enid Dodds, of Masterton, widow of Mr Peter H. Dodds of Marton, the service being conducted by the Rev Canon D. J. Davies. Dig for Victory. A start was made yesterday at the Kent Terrace plot in connection with the gardening demonstrations, when the chairman of the “Dig for Victory” committee outlined the programme that would be carried out each day between 12.30 and 1.30 p.m. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., who is organising the campaign throughout the Dominion, spoke of the real necessity for getting into home gardening, so that produce from market gardens and the Government vegetable farms could be reserved for the Fighting Services in the Dominion, the Pacific, and the Middle East. “This is no stunt organisation,” he said. “It is a practical necessity to obtain the vegetables that we must have.” A Wet September. Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports that the rainfall for September was 8.01 inches. There were 20 wet days and the heaviest fall 2.02 inches cn September 7. Previous September recordings are: 1941, 3.28 inches; 1942, 6.08 inches.' Earthquake. A sharp earthquake was felt in Carterton yesterday afternoon at 2.45 o’clock and caused some alarm. Wairarapa Rugby Union. The final meeting for the season of the committee of the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union will be held in the Foresters’ Hall, Carterton, tomorrow night at 7.30 o’clock. Personal. Mrs W. A. Macnab (Lower Hutt) and Mrs Allan Day (Ngatea) have been staying with their mother, Mrs- M. Ellis, of Carterton.
