GERMAN FURY

UNLEASHED IN NORTHERN ITALY CAMPAIGN OF MURDER & ATROCITY. AGAINST FORMER ALLIES. LONDON, September 28. The German reign of terror over northern Italy has become as frightful as anything in their record of war crimes. They are raping, shooting, robbing and destroying in unrestrained fury against their former allies, says Reuter’s correspondent with the Fifth Army. Thousands of hunted refugees are coming over the mountains to Fifth Army outposts. They speak of the Germans rounding up civilian men and taking them off to the north, nobody knows where, and dragging away women, who are never seen again. When their orders are not instantly obeyed they start shooting. Whole families have been wiped out, and stores of food have been stolen. The British United Press correspondent at Brindisi says refugees from Rome say that the Germans shelled the centre of Rome before they entered the city and then looted it. They even held up civilians and took their watches and wallets. Algiers radio says that the Germans are evacuating factories and their workers from Naples, and that small contingents of workers have already been transferred to Germany. The Berlin radio says that the Badogilo Government is functioning from Bari. Reuter’s correspondent at Taranto says that Italian naval officers arriving there report that the Italian crews scuttled the luxury liners Rex and Conte di Savoia, the former at Trieste and the latter at Venice.
