BUILT IN CANADA

POWERFUL TYPE OF DESTROYER. OTTAWA, September 18. A powerful Tribal, the first destroyer to be built in Canada, was launched at Halifax today. The keel of a sister warship will be laid above the same slipway. The new destroyer will be nam Micmac after a Nova Scotian Indian tribe. The Micmac is about 300 tons heavier and 50 feet longer than the next largest Canadian destroyer class. The principal armament comprises six 4.7 inch guns compared with the normal destroyer armament of four such guns. It also carries two 4 inch guns. The anti-aircraft equipment consists of multiple pompom mounting and several hurricane guns. The speed of previous tribals is about 36 knots. The Micmac will join the three Canadian tribals already engaged in European waters. For naval men the launching of the Micmac is an important milestone in Canadian naval shipbuilding history. The present personnel of the Canadian Navy, including 3,700 Wrens, is approximately 7,000 officers and men. Before the war the naval personnel was under 2,000.
