ENDOWMENT TRUSTS DECISION OF MAORIS.. (“Times-Age" Special.) A representative meeting of Maoris was held in Masterton recently to elect three Maori members for the Trust Board in pursuant of the provisions of the Papawai and Kaikokirikiri Trust Act, which will operate as from October 1. After the provisions of the Act had been explained by Mr Stace, of the Native Department and interpreted by Mr O. Heketa, the meeting decided by 26 votes to 6 that as a protest against the action by the Government that it be notified that the Ngati-Kahunguru tribe declined to recommend the appointment of the three Maori members of the Papawai and Kaikokirikiri Trust Board contemplated by a section of the Act. The decision of the meeting was conveyed to Judge Whitehead, of the Native Land Court, who presided at the afternoon sitting and after hearing the reasons for the objections intimated that he would make his recommendations to the authorities. A similar action was taken by a large meeting of Maoris in connection with the Porirua and Otaki Trusts. Slips on Road. Bulldozers are being used to clear up the large slips on the Palliser Bay Road. River Breaks Bank. A break in the banks at the Turan-, ganui River deviation has caused considerable flooding of valuable land in that area. Whitebait Season. Rough weather has materially delayed the “run" of whitebait. With better weather there- should be a decided improvement in the catch J Personal Items. S Home Guardsmen Matenga, Tawhiri, McDonald and Halidone leave on Sunday to take part in the Ruatoria celebrations. Mr T. Long, Wellington, was a visitor to Pirinoa over the weekend. A farewell social gathering to Air I Trainee Tom Ahipene was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Karaitiana, I when many friends and visitors were , present. Mr Watene, chairman of the ' j local Tribal Committee, presented the guest with a signet ring and tendered J to him the best wishes of the Maori and p'akeha residents. A presentation was also made to Dispenser McKevin. who has been overseas and is return- ' ing as a member of the Air Force, on behalf of Mr and Mrs T. Ahipene. Mrs M. Ahipene also presented her grandi son with a wristlet watch. Mr M. McKinley has joined the staff of the local cheese factory. Mr S. Thomas was a visitor to Pirinoa at the weekend. Mrs and Miss Riwai have been on ia visit to Wellington. Miss Chris. Enoka, Dannevirke, is visiting' her parents at Pirinoa.
