OF THE RUSSIAN ARMIES
Soviet Reports Progress on All Fronts DETERMINED ASSAULT ON DNIEPER CROSSINGS ENEMY BRIDGEHEAD IN KUBAN FURTHER REDUCED LONDON, September 27. Two years ago German armies crossed the Dnieper in the course of their invasion of Russia. Now the Germans are crossing the Dnieper again, in the opposite direction. Three months ago the Germans launched their attack on the Kursk salient. Now German armies, defeated and heavily mauled, are fighting rearguard actions 200 miles west of Kursk. Artillery duels on a great scale are in progress along the Dnieper, where the Russians are reported to be extending their foothold on the west bank. A Soviet communique reports advances by the Red Army on all fronts. The Russians have captured a town at the southern end of the enemy’s Kuban bridgehead. It was the only town of any size left in the Germans’'shrinking bridgehead. It had been used by the enemy in getting troops across the Kerch Straits. Another important Soviet success is the capture of a large town on the Dnieper. Further progress is reported in the Russian drives on Kremenchug and Kiev. They have taken a district centre 20 miles from Kremenchug, on the railway from Poltava. Advances are also recorded in the direction of Gomel.
