B!G MAJORITY AGAINST PROHIBITION INCREASED VOTE FOR STATE CONTROL FIGURES SO FAR ANNOUNCED With results from 12 districts not yet complete, the outstanding feature of the national licensing poll is an increase in the vote for State purchase and control. Only 750,839 votes are so far accounted for, compared with 906,334 cast in 1938 —a decrease of 155,495. The continuance vote has decreased by 130,339 and the no-licence vote by 31.891 but the State control vote has increased by 6735. The combined continuance and State control vote shows a majority of 288,205 over the nolicence vdte, compared with 3/9,918 in 1938. Comparative figures are: — 1943 Percentage Continuance 416,656 55.4 State Control 102,836 13 7 No Licence 231,317 30.8 Total 750,839 1938 Percentage Continuance 546,995 60.0 State Control 96,131 10.6 No Licence .. 263,208 29.0 906,334 LOCAL OPTION POSITION UNCHANGED. NG-LICENSE MAJORITY IN MASTERTON. With two results not yet complete, voting in no-license districts on the local option issue shows only three districts' with a majority in favour of restoration and in no case is the majority sufficiently large to affect the present position. Invercargill went the nearest to obtaining the required threefifths majority. Masterton, which in 1938 had a majority of 845 in favour of restoration, this year has a majority of 142 in favour of no-license. An asterisk indicates that results are incomplete.
