DNIEPER DRIVE
RUSSIANS CROSS RIVER AT SEVERAL POINTS PARATROOPS ATTACKING GERMAN REAR. r " ‘ RAPID PROGRESS TOWARDS. GOMEL. I LONDON, September 26. The Russians have reached the Dnieper at several points. In its drive towards the river, the Red Army has advanced up to nine miles and captured 70 places. A number of Russians have crossed the Dnieper at points between Kiev and Dnepropetrovsk. The Germans admit that some Russian troops have succeeded in crossing the river. Russian paratroops have also been landed behind the Germans defending the western bank of the river. In their drive towards Gomel, the Russians have advanced from seven to eleven miles, and occupied over 300 towns and villages, including two places on the line from Bryansk to Gomel, one of them 30 miles from Gomel. Further north, beyond Bryansk, the Russian drive is developing towards a railway junction on the line from Leningrad to Gomel. Four hundred places have been liberated.
