Coal Shipments. Twenty-five thousand tons of coal which had been held up in Westport through floods and heavy seas, left by five ships yesterday for distribution to various ports in the North Island. In very convincing manner W. H. Nelson (Southern Air Rorce) won the New Zealand combined services’ crosscountry championship race held at Wanganui on Saturday afternoon from a strong field. The race was over a course of 7| miles, and the winner’s time was 44.55. A. B. Brown (Northern Army), 45.4 was second, and F. B. Silver (Central Air Force), 45.27, was third. The team placings were: Southern Air Force, 24 points, 1; Central Army, 38, 2; Northern Army, 51, 3. Then followed Central Air Force, Northern Navy, Southern Navy, Northern Air Force and Southern Army, in that order. Interhouse Dance. The Masonic Hall, Masterton, was crowded on Saturday night when the Wairarapa Interhouse Association held another of its popular dances. During the evening progress election results were announced by courtesy of the “Times-Age” and by radio. A special attraction was a dance due presented by Joan McLaren and Elizabeth Heisenberg, pupils of Miss Beulah Hirst, the item being encored. Character numbers were given by Lieut. Ken. Jones. Mr. W. L. Butler was responsible for the spotlight effects. The music was supplied by the After-Beat Maori Orchestra and extras were played by Mr. C. Thorne. Messrs. J. Bruce and A. Parsons were M.’sC. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss June Askew and Mr. J. O’Brien. Supper was served by the Transport indoor basketball team. The next dance will be held on Friday night.
