WELL SUSTAINED
AIR OFFENSIVE AGAINST GERMANY HEAVY NIGHT ATTACK ON RHINE CITIES. WIDELY EXTENDED RAIDS ON FRANCE. LONDON, September 24. At least 20 German fighters were shot down today during an Anglo-American air offensive over France, Forces of Mitchell and Typhoon bombers were escorted by fighters in attacks on airfields and other targets. Eight Allied fighters were lost. American Marauders, escorted by R.A.F. Spitfires, also attacked German airfields. The daylight offensive opened soon after R.A.F. bombers, in their hundreds, had touched down on their return from an attack on Mannheim and Ludwigshaven, the twin German cities on the Upper Rhine. Engineering and chemical works, docks and railways made first-class targets. It was a clear night. Many German night fighters were up and flares were dropped. In the words of one pilot: “It was almost like a daylight attack.’ 1 ' Many of the challenging fighters were destroyed. The night’s operations cost 32 bombers.
Fighters on intruder patrols over Germany and France shot down four German aircraft.
