STAGGERING LOSS.

SUFFERED BY JAPANESE FORTY PLANES SHOT DOWN NEAR FINSCHAFEN. ALLIED FORCES NEARING TOWN. LONDON, September 23. Forty Japanese aircraft have been shot down near Finschafen, in New Guinea. This success occurred after the Allied landing six miles 1 from Finschafen, when the covering warships were withdrawing. Allied fighters intercepted an enemy force of bombers and fighters and shot down 40 for the loss of three Allied planes. Japanese resistance is being rapidly reduced, and Allied troops are pressing on towards Finschafen itself. The airfield has already been reached, and Allied troops are only two miles from the town, which is well within range of our guns.
