PATRIOTIC FUND
DEFICIENCY IN DISTRICT QUOTA £l2OO STILL REQUIRED APPEAL BY THE MAYOR “It is now three weeks since I made [ an appeal to this district to complete its quota to the Wairarapa Patriotic Fund, for which there was a deficiency of £1600,” said the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, this morning. “Since then,” Mr Jordan continued, “has come the downfall of Italy and I suggested that this should be made an occasion for showing our relief and our gratitude to our forces, not by tawdry parades, but by putting our hands in our pockets. In the past week I have heard most of the politicians extol the achievements of our troops and every audience applauded this reference to the echo. I have heard, too, the politicians acclaim that everyone now has twice as much money to spend, even after paying the huge taxation, as he had eight years ago. The ladies have willingly come to our help and what is the result? What is the measure of our thanksgiving, our gratitude to our men, our sense of responsibility? We have added a paltry £4OO to the fund that provides a little extra fs/r the men that do our fighting and our suffering. And our effort, so they say, is the best in the world. There is still a week to go and £l2OO to find. Surely this is not beyond the gratitude and generosity of this fortunate district.” WOMEN’S EFFORT SUM OF £421 RAISED The Masterton Women’s Thanksgiving Week appeal brought in £421 4s lOd. Further donations may be left with the Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, until the end of the month, when the quota is due.
