Storm in Auckland. A severe electrical storm swept over Auckland city and suburbs before daybreak yesterday. It was accompanied by heavy rain. In a part of Epsom the storm assumed cyclonic proportions. A tremendous gale travelling from Mt. Eden toward Manukau Road left a trail of damage. Broken branches and tiles torn from portions of the roofs of several houses were scattered around. Slates were carried away from part of the roof of the Epsom library. Friendly Societies. Captain Justin Power, Independent candidate for the Masterton seat, addressing a meeting of electors in the Masterton Cntral School last evening, stated that it would seem to be part of the Government’s long range plan to bring about the total extinction of friendly societies. This, the candidate said, was a very serious question, and one which members of the Independent Group were determined, if elected, to straighten out, and to restore these much-needed units in the community back to their former sphere of usefulness at the earliest possible moment. Masterton Seat. “The issue in Masterton at the forthcoming election will surely be between Labour and Independent, because the Masterton electors are sufficiently astute to appreciate that their chosen representative should and must devote the whole of his time to the affairs of the constituency, and also reside in the electorate. This demand is a fair and reasonable one, and only the Labour and Independent candidates offer this service to the electors,” stated Captain Justin Power, Independent candidate for Masterton, when addressing a wellattended meeting held in the Central School last evening.
