PATRIOTIC FUND
MASTERTON DISTRICT QUOTA WOMEN’S APPEAL SUM OF £l2BO STILL WANTED During the past week a further appeal has been made by the Masterton Women's Patriotic Committee and presidents of women’s organisations for funds towards this year’s patriotic quota of £10,374 for Masterton and district. Patriotic funds raised throughout the whole of New Zealand supply all the money year by year required by the Y.M.C.A., Red Cross, overseas parcels, etc. Last year, of the £BOO,OOO paid into the National Patriotic Fund Board, the main items of expenditure were briefly: Prisoners of war comforts, £171,000; sick and wounded comforts including grants to the joint council of the Order of St John and N.Z. Red Cross Society, £101,286; comforts for troops overseas and in New Zealand, including grants to the Y.M.C.A., Church Army, Salvation Army, Catholic War Services Fund Board, Navy League War Council, Air Force Relations and Overseas Seamen’s Gift Committees, £483,336. This money is controlled by a Patriotic Fund Board and not by the Government. It is recalled that General Freyberg acknowledged the assistance received from the fund when he spoke in Masterton recently.
A week’s contributions at the Queen Street Depot total £322 18s Id. This, with the money already in hand, leaves £l2BO still to be raised if the quota is to be completed. Masterton and district have never fallen down on that objective yet. Contributions may be left tomorrow at the Queen Street Depot or at the Town Clerk’s office before the end of this month.
