JUNIOR RED CROSS
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS * GATHERING IN MASTERTON ON SATURDAY. DISPLAY OF HANDCRAFTS. I I About 750 Junior Red Cross members from mid-Wairarapa circles attended the 21st birthday celebrations of. the New Zealand Junior Red Cross Society held at the Wairarapa College on Saturday. A splendid display of handcrafts, the work of Junior Red Cross members, was on exhibition and demonstrations of copper work, pewter work, woodwork, spinning and weaving were given by members in the morning. An interesting demonstration of home dyeing of wool was given by Mrs F. C Brockett, who showed an interested audience a lovely range of colours which could be obtained from lichens, mosses, onion peelings, etc. Beautiful weather enabled the young people to enjoy outdoor games and two sessions of a Punch and Judy Show were given in the Art Room. After a picnic lunch there was a splendid concert and community sing. The programme was as follows: — Junior Red Cross song; Solway College, group of songs; community sing; talk on physical fitness and posture, Miss Ward, masseuse at Masterton Hospital, assisted by Whatman School; Fernridge School, action song; Convent, group of songs; community sing; Miss Abraham, dietitian, Masterton Hospital, talk on food and rest; Wairarapa College, humorous recital, Miss N. Tinsley; Fernridge School, action song; Convent, first aid and life saving demonstration; Solway College, group of songs; birthday message, Mrs Tolhurst, circle presidents light candles; “Fight the Good Fight” and “God Defend New Zealand.”
The hostesses for the day were the Wairarapa College Junoi’ Red Cross Circle. Dorothy Heckler, secretary, announced the items for the concert and Barbara Napier, president, proposed a vote of thanks to all whose efforts had contributed to the success of the party. This was carried by aclamation. At the conclusion of the concert programme the birthday cake was cut by Mrs Gair and afternoon tea was served to all present. The accompaniments for the community singing were played by Miss McDonald, Solway College. Birthday donations to a fund for New Zealand orphanages and baby homes amounted to £l4 to date.
Junior Red Cross Circles from the following schools were represented:— Carterton D.H.S., Wairarapa College, Solway College, St Bride’s Convent, Whatman, Correspondent School, Whakataki, Tinui, Mangapakeha, Bideford, Okatete Native School, Ngahape, Rangitumau, Fernridge, Gladstone, Taueru, Solway Primary, Mauriceville, Te Whiti, Lansdowne, Central, West, Hastwell, Opaki. Members of the Country Districts and Masterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Societies assisted with lunch and afternoon tea and the marshals for the morning and afternoon were Messrs Kennedy and Coddington. Among those present and assisting were the Junior Red Cross Committee, Misses Horneman and Tankersley (representing the Educational Institute), Mrs Stewart (V.A.D’s), Miss Craig (Health Department), Miss Cocker (Plunket Society), Mrs Brockett (art and crafts), Mr Brockett (Agriculture), Mr Norman Lee (president of the Wairarapa Red Cross Centre), Miss Elliot (secretary of the Wairarapa Red Cross Centre), Miss Ross (treasurer of the Wairarapa Red Cross Centre) and many teachers and friends.
