NAVAL ATTACK

ON JAPANESE OCCUPIED ISLANDS MADE BY STRONG AMERICAN FORCES. NERVOUSNESS IN TOKIO. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 19. A communique from the United States naval base at Pearl Harbour says that strong Pacific Ocean forces attacked the Japanese-held islands of Nauru, midway between. the Solomons and Marshall Islands, and Tawara, in the Gilbert Islands group.' Details are awaited.

The Gilbert Islands and Nauru are part of the outpost chain of strongpoints set up by the Japanese to guard the approach to their main ocean bases and neutralisation of the chain might compel the Japanese Fleet to come out and give action. The Tokio radio is showing considerable nervousness about Allied intentions. Last night the radio said that the Allies apparently intended to make a direct attack on the Japanese mainland and were preparing to seize bases in the Pacific for that purpose. A second intention of the Allies seemed to be to attack strongly in the area east of India.
