UNCEASING ATTACKS
IN AND BEHIND BATTLE AREA. WORK OR ALLIED AIR FORCES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) . RUGBY, September 17. The strength of the air support given to the Allied ground forces on the Salerno front is indicated in a North Africa air communique which states: “Medium and light bombers of the North-West African Air Force on Wednesday night attacked road junctions and enemy transport in the Auletta and Potenza areas. Yesterday heavy and medium bombers attacked road and railway bridges and other points around the Naples and Salerno areas. They again encountered no enemy aircraft. Medium and light bombers, fighter-bombers and fighters continued to attack troop concentrations ' and transport in the battle zone, destroying a number of vehicles. Fighters maintained constant patrols over the* .Salerno area. Last night an enemy airfield at Cisterna Littoria was attacked by night bombers. One enemy aircraft was destroyed during the period. Two of our aircraft are missing.” Support, too. was provided by bombers from North African bases. A Middle East air communique states: “Liberators of the Ninth United States Air Force bombed the road junction of Potenza. R.A.F. Liberators and Hallfaxes attacked supply dumps in the Potenza area on Wednesday night. A Junkers 88 was destroyed by R.A.F. fighters in the Eastern Mediterranean
