THE DELIGHT OF TRAVEL
> “I protest as a public man against this wilful waste of public money which is being thrown into the pockets of individuals to trip round the world at the expense of an overtaxed community.” The man who said that was Mr Semple. The year was 1935. Then we had Mr Parry: “If Labour were in power we would be able to get one man who would do the job, and would not have two Ministerial representatives going from New Zealand.” And so on. But, as with so many other things, once Labour got into office, new records were broken. The new Ministers practically queued up for a chance to get overseas. . . Mr Nash, the most footloose Minister in New Zealand’s history, had two protracted tours abroad in four years. Latterly he has been “seeing America first,” but when it was suggested that he might have another look at dear old Kidderminster before returning to Maoriland, the Prime Minister ,if reported correctly at the time, was not amused. Well, well. Maybe it was someone else’s turn. But back to our Cook’s tourists. Messrs Fraser, Langstone and ‘Jones have all had their share, perhaps more than their share, of globetrotting “at the expense of an overtaxed commun ity.” (Thanks, Bob.) Even a little jaunt to Australia was not to be sneezed at, was it, Mr Parry? A pity the war came along to interrupt the picnic. And it looks as if the chance is gone forever now. Too bad!—Advt.
