EARTHQUAKE REPAIRS 4

POSSIBILITY OF GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. MR NASH TO LOOK INTO MATTER. The possibility of some assistance being forthcoming from the Government for the renair of earthquake damaged buildings at Masterton was mentioned by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, when speaking in Masterton last night. Referring to a suggestion by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, that it might be possible to use portion of the War Damage Fund for the purpose of earthquake restoration, Mr Nash said that was not practicable under the present regulations, as the fund was for war risks during the war period. After the war, under the direction of Parliament, it might be possible for some of the funds to be used, though he did not know that it could be made retrospective. There might be circumstances in connection with the rebuilding of these places that would make it impossible to obtain money in the ordinary way. If that were so, he hoped to look into the matter and study it to see if something could be done. He could assure them that what ought to be donewould be done.
